A feel for the region.

The southern Nicoya Peninsula around Cóbano, Santa Teresa, Malpaís, Montezuma and Tambor, in Puntarenas province.

The appeal

A peninsula stay shaped by a particular beach community, with coastal nature around it.

A practical tradeoff

A mainland connection and the onward peninsula journey need to work together. Build around the base you choose, rather than a daily circuit of every town.

Setting
Southern peninsula beaches, coves and coastal forest.
Everyday pace
Choose a surf-focused base or a different coastal community.
Getting around
Connect your arrival route with the onward journey to the selected town.
Everyday services
Cóbano is the commercial town anchor for these coastal communities.
Seasonal considerations
Pacific seasonality; check the route and outing for your dates.
Compare with another region

Give the smaller place names room

A Santa Teresa trip, a Montezuma stay and a Tambor holiday do not begin with the same decision. Choose the community where you want to spend most of your time. Santa Teresa can lead a surf-focused shortlist; Malpaís, Montezuma and Tambor give you other coastal communities to investigate.

These places lie on the southern peninsula in Puntarenas province. Guanacaste covers the northern part of the peninsula too, so “Nicoya” and “Guanacaste” are not interchangeable directions. Use the specific community name when booking accommodation and transport.

Book the complete journey

If your route includes a Gulf of Nicoya crossing, consider its timing together with the onward connection and accommodation check-in. Confirm current schedules directly with the operator. The same principle applies within the peninsula: plan a particular outing from your actual base, rather than assuming every place is an easy addition to every day.

A visit with one clear center

  • First day: arrive and get to know the immediate surroundings of your base.
  • Main day: choose a coastal or nature outing, with time left for a meal and the community itself.
  • Extra day: explore another nearby setting only after confirming the journey and current access.

Cabo Blanco brings protected coastal nature into the southern-peninsula picture; use official visitor information for the outing you intend. Cóbano provides a town anchor for practical errands. Locate both in relation to your accommodation before adding them to the plan.

For a first glimpse of the scenery, watch the Montezuma coastal-waterfall clip. It is an aerial view, rather than an access guide. Let it spark the idea; use the chosen community and real journey to shape the visit.
